Wanting to Work
Not everyone wants to be a stay at home mum and with new maternity leave options some mothers can return to work soon after giving birth. Make sure you do not underestimate the demands of a new baby if this is your first baby.
This is probably the best option, especially if it is less than six weeks since delivery as your body needs time to recuperate from the major changes that have taken place. If your job is physically demanding, make sure you are up to it, there are a lot of demands on you early on in motherhood.
Flexibility
If you have a job where you can have flexible hours and work when you are able this is going to be a win win situation.
Incorporate rest breaks into your schedule so you can recharge your batteries. Breastfeeding - If you need to nurse or pump on the job make sure you have the time and a suitable place for this.
Working From Home
This is another option and one that is proving a satisfactory option for many mothers. The advantages are many but there are a few drawbacks as well that can be avoided with careful planning.
Make time to work uninterrupted (save for emergencies), time that is away from baby in a specified work space is the best option. Some people can manage with a more flexible schedule if they are disciplined.
Plan in for transition time, this could be making calls, opening mail or just research time when you can move your thoughts from nappies to deadlines.
Nannies/Hired Help are an ideal option.
If you are getting $30.00 per hour for your work why not pay someone else $15.00 to do the cleaning? You will still come out in front and you will have the advantage of keeping your hand in at work. Many people hire nannies to look after baby's needs while they work.
Other Options
Organise swapped childcare with other parents if you want to work only a little, you take both babies one day and they take them the other. Short blocks of time are also useful, the brain functions most efficiently in this way especially if you are worried about baby.
Be realistic in your expectations, you are not a robot.
